Don’t just switch it on – test it properly!
With the boating season just around the corner, now is a good time to give your bilge pump a proper test. It’s easy to flick the switch and assume everything is working, but don’t forget to check the automatic float switch too.
Add enough water to the bilge to make sure the pump activates automatically. Tip: make sure you block the limber holes so the water doesn’t spread and is contained around the pump then check that it’s pumping freely and discharging properly.
While you’re there, have a quick look for any debris around the pump and check the hoses and connections. It’s a simple five-minute job that’s much better done at the dock than discovered when you actually need it!
